Lesson 2 – Paying Attention Like the Great Blue Heron

Slide Content
Slide 1 Lesson1-slider1 Lesson Objective: Paying Attention Like the Great Blue Heron Students explore the importance of quiet and stillness by practicing mindfulness, like the Great Blue Heron:

  • Sit tall in a mindful posture.
  • Notice what happens in their body when paying attention.
  • Explore sensations in legs and hands.
  • Practice slow, deliberate movements.

They develop awareness and a deeper connection to themselves and the world.

Slide 2 Lesson1-slider2 Introduction: Review mindfulness and inner ocean. Ask: • What is mindfulness? (Let a student answer.) Mindfulness is paying attention with openness, kindness, and curiosity. • Why is mindfulness important? (Let students reflect.) It helps us become more calm, aware, and present.
Slide 3 Lesson1-slider3 Introducing the Blue Heron: Our Mindful Teacher Meet the Great Blue Heron, a bird that stands tall and still by the water. It observes, waits, and pays attention—just like we can.
Slide 4 Lesson1-slider4 Watch the Heron: The Blue Heron is a master of catching fish by being still. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcBRgZMX1dE (1:36 min)
Slide 5 Lesson1-slider5 Student Discovery Questions: • What did you notice about the Great Blue Heron? (Still, quiet, observing) • Did it move fast or slow? (Slow) • Why did it stand still? (To catch fish) • What happens if it moves too much? (It scares the fish away) By being still, we observe our inner ocean better.
Slide 6 Practice: Sitting Like a Heron Sit tall and still. Watch what’s inside: thoughts, feelings, sensations—your inner ocean.

  • Head balanced, spine straight.
  • Hands on knees, eyes closed.
  • Be still and silent for 2 minutes.
  • Guide students to notice thoughts/emotions like fish in water.
  • Ring a bell when done.

Celebrate: “Amazing job being Herons!”

Slide 7 Lesson1-slider7 Reflection: • What did you notice inside? • Was it easy or hard to be still?Closing: Encourage students to practice stillness during the week. “Next week, we’ll meet another mindful animal teacher!”
