The Story of innerU

A Journey from Struggle to Strength

While training as a therapist in California, Anne-Marie found herself deeply moved by the struggles of the students she worked with. She saw children overwhelmed by emotions they didn’t understand—frustration, ... anxiety, sadness—without the tools to navigate them. It was disconcerting that children knew how to read, write, and solve math problems, but when it came to handling inner and life’s challenges, they were left without educational guidance. This realization struck a deep personal chord with the understanding of how different Anne-Marie’s journey might have been if taught socio-emotional skills and mindfulness as a child. And then came the question that changed everything: Why do we teach children all these subjects, except how to understand themselves, their inner world, their thoughts, emotions, and the very essence of what it means to be human.

From this awareness, innerU was born.

innerU was created to fill the gap in primary education, providing children with the tools they need to understand and care for their mental and emotional wellbeing. Through engaging lessons, mindfulness practices, socio-emotional learning and nature-based practices, innerU helps students navigate their emotions, manage stress, and develop resilience for life’s inevitable challenges. But Anne-Marie knew that mindfulness couldn’t just be another subject squeezed into a busy school day—it had to be alive, engaging, and deeply connected to the natural world. She turned to the greatest teachers of all—the trees, the waves, the animals, and the changing seasons—and developed a program where nature itself became the classroom.

Since its creation, innerU has been taught in numerous schools across the United States and Canada, growing into a movement that is helping children reconnect with themselves through the wisdom of nature. Teachers, educators, and school leaders have embraced the program, witnessing firsthand how students become more focused, more compassionate, and more emotionally resilient. What started as one woman’s vision to ease the suffering of children has become a mission to change the way we educate—bringing mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and nature’s wisdom into classrooms across the world.

Unlike typical social-emotional programs that focus on teaching concepts, innerU Mindfulness Nature-Based Adventures goes deeper—empowering students with the practical skills they need to build lasting emotional resilience. innerU bridges a crucial gap in education by combining mindfulness practices with social-emotional learning, helping children develop real-world tools to navigate their emotions, regulate their nervous systems, and manage their thoughts. Rather than just learning about emotions, students experience hands on, nature-based activities that strengthen their ability to self-regulate, connect, and thrive—both in the classroom and beyond. By integrating innerU, educators can foster calmer, more engaged learners who are equipped with the skills to handle challenges, build meaningful relationships, and develop a lifelong sense of well-being.

Our Approach

Our Approach

At innerU, we believe mindfulness is best learned through experience, curiosity, and connection—not just as a concept, but as a way of being. Our approach blends mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and nature-based learning to create engaging, hands-on experiences that help children and educators alike develop self-awareness, resilience, and inner peace.

By using nature as our teacher, we bring mindfulness to life through the wisdom of the ocean’s rhythm, the patience of trees, and the stillness of animals in the wild. Through storytelling, movement, breathwork, and sensory exploration, we help children understand their emotions, manage stress, and cultivate presence in a way that feels natural, joyful, and deeply meaningful.

For educators, innerU provides simple yet powerful tools to seamlessly integrate mindfulness into the classroom, fostering a calm, heart-centered, and focused learning environment where both teachers and students can thrive. Mindfulness isn’t just something we teach—it’s something we live, breathe, and grow together.
